Promoting Circular Economy, IPST ASARI Strengthens Community-Based Waste Management in Cilegon

The Integrated Waste Processing Facility (IPST) ASARI in Cilegon City, facilitated by Chandra Asri Group, has increased its plastic waste processing capacity to up to 300 kg per day. This downstream waste management initiative is independently operated by KSM Sehati Maju Bersama to help reduce the burden on TPSA Bagendung, which currently receives around 200 tons of waste every day. Since its launch in 2021, the program has involved more than 9,200 local residents, encouraging the community to see waste, especially plastic, not as a problem, but as a resource with economic value.

Until now, IPST ASARI has processed more than 79,700 kg of plastic waste. Around 32,200 kg of this waste has been converted through pyrolysis technology into approximately 26,800 liters of “PLUSRI” oil. Beyond reducing waste, the initiative also creates employment opportunities through the production of “CIRCLO” shredded plastic and the processing of used cooking oil, which supports the needs of local MSMEs in the surrounding area. Through these activities, residents gain additional income opportunities while also developing new local business initiatives.

Murad M. Yasin, Head of IPST ASARI, explained that the active participation of communities in plastic waste processing has created tangible economic benefits for the community. Meanwhile, Nicko Setyabudi, Circular Economy and Partnership Manager of Chandra Asri Group, emphasized that IPST ASARI represents a strategic collaboration that protects the environment while empowering communities through technology. Looking ahead, the facility is expected to continue inspiring community-based waste management practices that support the development of a green and circular economy in Cilegon.
