World Mangrove Day: Mangrove Seedlings Bringing Hope and New Economic Opportunities

By Chandra Asri Group Editorial Team

Every year on 26 July, the world observes World Mangrove Day to raise awareness of the vital role mangrove ecosystems play in protecting coastal areas. In Patikang Village, Pandeglang Regency, however, mangroves represent far more than a natural barrier against coastal erosion. For the local community, they have become a source of new hope—creating economic opportunities while encouraging long-term environmental conservation.

This progress has been made possible through collaboration between the local community and various stakeholders, including PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk (Chandra Asri Group), which has supported mangrove rehabilitation efforts while helping develop mangrove seedling cultivation as an additional source of income for coastal residents.

The journey began with the initiative of the Baraya Patikang Group, led by Deden. At the time, Patikang's mangrove ecosystem had suffered significant degradation as mangrove trees were widely harvested for firewood and construction materials. Concerned about the deteriorating condition of the coastal environment, Deden and his colleagues decided to establish a community-based mangrove nursery.

"We started cultivating mangrove seedlings because we saw how severely the mangroves had deteriorated. At first, it was just my friends and me—we hadn't invited the wider community to join us yet," Deden recalled.

Driven by a commitment to restore the coastal ecosystem, Deden and his team taught themselves mangrove propagation techniques by studying online resources and instructional videos. Their efforts eventually enabled them to produce healthy seedlings ready for planting.

"We learned how to cultivate mangroves by watching videos on the internet. After we started growing the seedlings, we casually shared them on social media. To our surprise, people became interested and began purchasing the seedlings," he said.

The growing demand marked a turning point. The community began to realize that mangroves were not only essential for protecting the environment but also held real economic value. Residents who had previously relied solely on fishing gradually started cultivating mangrove seedlings as an additional source of income.

Over the past four years, the Baraya Patikang Group has sold more than 38,000 mangrove seedlings. Priced at approximately Rp5,000 per seedling, the initiative has demonstrated growing economic potential alongside the increasing demand for coastal rehabilitation projects.

"Alhamdulillah, we are already seeing the benefits. Group members who once depended entirely on fishing now have an additional source of income. Many of them have even been able to build up savings to help cover their daily household needs," Deden explained.

Beyond generating economic benefits, mangrove seedling cultivation has also contributed to restoring the coastal ecosystem. Every seedling planted helps restore the ecological functions of mangroves as natural coastal barriers against erosion while serving as carbon sinks that support climate change mitigation.

Throughout this journey, Chandra Asri Group has become one of the key partners supporting the growth of the Baraya Patikang Group by purchasing mangrove seedlings for rehabilitation programs and contributing to the development of facilities within the Patikang ecotourism area.

"Chandra Asri Group has provided tremendous support. In addition to purchasing our mangrove seedlings, the company has also helped develop facilities in this area, including its ecotourism site," Deden said.

For Deden, however, the greatest achievement is not the number of seedlings sold. It is seeing once-barren coastal land transformed into thriving mangrove forests once again. Looking ahead, he hopes more community members will become involved in mangrove cultivation so that both the economic and environmental benefits can continue to grow for future generations.

The story of Patikang demonstrates that environmental conservation and community prosperity can go hand in hand. Through collaboration among local communities, government, and the private sector, caring for mangroves nurtures more than just trees along the coastline—it cultivates hope, strengthens environmental resilience, and creates sustainable economic opportunities for generations to come.
