During the panel discussion titled “Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): Opportunities, Challenges, Policy Direction, and Ecosystem Development in Indonesia” at InviroTech 2026, Chandra Asri Group, represented by Andang Pungkase, Head of ESG & Sustainability, shared its perspective on the role of CCS as a key decarbonization solution for industrial sectors. CCS is considered particularly relevant for reducing residual emissions that cannot be fully eliminated through energy efficiency improvements, process optimization, or the adoption of renewable energy.
For industries categorized as hard-to-abate sectors, CCS is seen as an important enabler in the journey toward achieving net-zero emissions. However, its implementation continues to face several challenges, including significant capital requirements, regulatory certainty, supporting infrastructure development, and the need for viable business models that can improve project economics.
Aligned with Chandra Asri Group’s ABCD decarbonization strategy (Abate, Balance, Control, and Decarbonize), CCS is viewed as one of the solutions that can support long-term emissions reduction, particularly for emissions that are difficult to eliminate through operational improvements alone. During the discussion, Chandra Asri Group emphasized the importance of developing an integrated CCS ecosystem. Echoing the views shared by other panelists, the Company highlighted that building such an ecosystem requires collaboration among government agencies, industry players, financial institutions, technology providers, and other stakeholders to accelerate CCS deployment in Indonesia.
With Indonesia’s significant carbon storage potential and growing decarbonization commitments across industries, CCS is expected to play a strategic role in supporting the country’s emissions reduction targets while creating new opportunities for the development of a low-carbon economy.
