Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is a gas transformed into a liquid, allowing it to be distributed safely. It is chilled to -162°C, decreasing the volume to 600 times its initial volume.
LNG has a lower density than water. It is odorless, colorless, and non-toxic. Despite being odorless, regasified natural gas is commonly added with odorants, such as ethyl mercaptan and tetrahydrothiophene (THT), to detect leaks. If the gas is not being odorized, the leak potential is monitored using gas sensors.
In general, LNG production undergoes three steps:
Natural gas can be liquefied through various cryogenic processes, including the cascade process and the Linde method. In the cascade process, natural gas is gradually cooled using several types of refrigerants with different boiling points until it reaches its liquefaction temperature.
Meanwhile, the Linde method utilizes a repetitive (regenerative) process of gas compression, cooling, and expansion, causing the gas temperature to continuously decrease until it eventually turns into a liquid.
LNG must be stored under special conditions because it has a very low boiling point of −162°C compared to conditions at the Earth’s surface. Therefore, LNG is stored in specially insulated steel tanks capable of maintaining such low temperatures without requiring an additional cooling system.
