Initially, silica sand, limestone, and soda ash are heated in a high-temperature furnace until they melt. The molten mixture is then drawn into fine fibers and collected in a woven fabric, yarn, or sheets.

These fine fibers are then bonded with polymer resin using various methods, such as compression molding, lamination, or injection molding. The cured composite of resin and glass fibers is ready for use as needed.

On the market, fiberglass is sold in fabric, mesh, sheathing, mats, tubes, and rods. Fabric fiberglass has high mechanical strength, making it suitable for vehicle components.

Mesh fiberglass is typically used on house facades and in insulation systems because it is more stable and less prone to cracking. Sheathing is commonly used as a decorative element, mats serve as thermal insulation in buildings, and tubes or rods are used as pipes or in light industrial structures.

Properties of Fiberglass

Fiberglass has particular characteristics, allowing it to be an alternative to aluminum and steel. Here are the properties:

1. R-Glass Fiber

This fiberglass is popular for its structural strength, making it safer and more stable. R-glass fiber is commonly used in aircraft and shipbuilding because it can withstand high temperatures and prolonged exposure to water.

R-glass fiber generally contains calcium, magnesium oxide, silicon, and aluminum. These materials provide high chemical and mechanical resistance, making this fiberglass ideal for challenging environments.

2. C-Glass Fiber

C-glass fiber is resistant to corrosive chemicals, making it suitable for highly humid environments or those involving corrosive liquids.

3. E-Glass Fiber

E-glass fiber is the most widely used type of fiberglass globally because it is cost-effective yet capable of delivering optimal performance. This fiberglass contains boron oxide, silicon, aluminum, magnesium, and calcium, making it durable in a variety of environmental conditions.

It is waterproof, solvent-resistant, and has good tensile strength. This fiberglass is commonly used in the automotive, construction, and sports equipment industries.

4. D-Glass Fiber

This fiberglass has a high dielectric constant, so it is often used in the telecommunications and technology sectors, including fiber-optic cables. D-glass fiber consists primarily of boron oxide and silicon, which provide good electrical insulation.
