What Is A Brownout?

A brownout is a temporary and controlled decrease in voltage supplied by the electrical grid. When a brownout happens, electronics may not work optimally, including dimming and flickering lamps. 

Generally, brownouts are implemented when electricity demand is high or the system is overloaded. This measure is taken to prevent widespread power outages or damage to equipment in the power grid.

The problem is that a voltage drop can reduce electronic devices' performance or even cause damage to devices that are sensitive to voltage fluctuations, like washing machines and refrigerators. That is why, when a brownout occurs, it is best to turn off these devices first.

A brownout could affect consumers directly. A voltage drop can dim the lamps and make the electronics work inefficiently. For freezers, this condition can melt ice and potentially lower the food quality. 

When a brownout happens for a long time, businesses can experience material loss, sales drop, and manufacturing difficulty.

1. Overloaded Grid

During certain seasons, such as heat waves, the demand for electricity to power fans and air conditioners increases. The utility company must be able to monitor the grid load, and if the demand surges, the voltage can be reduced in a controlled manner to prevent system failure.

2. Limited Infrastructure

Outdated infrastructure can experience overload when being forced to fulfill increasing demands. As a result, the voltage decreases automatically due to temperature rise within the system. 

3. Planned Grid Maintenance

A brownout is not only caused by a disaster or grid damage. It is also designed for planned grid maintenance. During the process, the utility company will turn off several components, resulting in a temporary voltage drop in several areas. 

Brownout vs. Blackout: What Is the Difference?

Brownouts and blackouts generally occur due to overloads or damage to the power grid. However, the two differ in mechanisms and measures.

A brownout is a drop in voltage or electrical current in a specific area to prevent a blackout. Thus, electricity continues to flow, and electronic devices can still operate, though their performance is reduced.

On the other hand, a blackout is a large-scale power grid interruption that completely cuts off electricity service. This means the power supply is cut off, and all electronic devices that rely on conventional electricity cannot function.

In summary, a brownout disrupts activities but remains manageable. Yet, a blackout is an uncontrolled and unmitigated power outage.

Consumers should also handle brownouts and blackouts differently. When a brownout occurs, you must immediately turn off and unplug equipment that is sensitive to voltage fluctuations to prevent damage or malfunctions.

Then, during a blackout, you must immediately unplug all electronic devices in the building to prevent power surges when the grid is restored. You can leave one light on to indicate that power has been restored.

The first thing to do when a brownout is imminent is to gather as much information as possible about the plan, especially when you live in an area prone to brownouts due to increased electricity demand. The utility company may provide information to customers via social media or text message.

Once you have confirmed this information, you can start preparing emergency supplies, such as non-perishable food, flashlights, medications, hygiene supplies, important documents, and extra clothing.

If you need to run a business or carry out activities at home, you can set up a generator, but be sure to operate it carefully to prevent dangerous risks.

Most importantly, when a brownout occurs, you must reduce your electricity usage. You can unplug non-essential electronic devices (such as computers and televisions) and turn off air conditioners, high-power appliances (such as dryers), and lights.
